Fossil fuel CO2 emissions are projected to hit a record 38.1 billion tonnes in 2025, rising 1.1% despite global efforts to shift to clean energy. Climate change is weakening Earth's carbon sinks, reducing their ability to absorb CO2. With emissions continuing to rise, scientists say it is no longer realistic to aim for the 1.5°C target.
