The Lakshadweep administration is considering acquiring Bitra, the smallest inhabited island in the Union Territory, for defence purposes, PTI reported. A July 11 notification stated that the intention was to transfer the entire island to defence and strategic agencies of the Centre due to its "strategic location" and "national security relevance". About 105 families reportedly live on the island.
