Researchers confirmed the discovery of Lycodon irwini, a glossy black wolf snake, on Great Nicobar Island. Named for Steve Irwin, the species resolves a taxonomic puzzle concerning an isolated, endemic population. It is uniformly black, unlike its banded relatives. Due to its rarity & restricted forest habitat, it is recommend this snake be classified as 'Endangered' under IUCN Red List.
