Scientists traced humans' attraction to alcohol to the habit of primates looking for fermented fruits that had ethanol. African apes, the common ancestor of humans, gorillas and chimpanzees, metabolised alcohol 40 times faster than other primates. "Our livers and our physiology are sort of like an evolutionary hangover from that time," said Nathaniel Dominy from Dartmouth College.
