During his 1921 South India tour, Mahatma Gandhi witnessed the poverty of laborers in Madurai, struggling in worn-out clothes. Deeply moved, he chose to shed his shirt and cap, adopting only a simple loincloth. The Mahatma said Madurai gave him necessary strength to shed his traditional attire for 'loincloth' at last.
