1730's Bishnoi movement: 363 martyred to save khejri trees
In the 1730s, the Bishnoi community of Khejarli, Rajasthan, launched one of India’s earliest environmental movements. Led by Amrita Devi Bishnoi, villagers opposed King Abhay Singh’s order to fell Khejri trees for palace construction. 363 Bishnoi's including Amrita Devi and her daughters, sacrificed their lives. This Bishnoi Movement pioneered wildlife and tree conservation.
