230-feet wide 'Gateway to Hell' fire, raging for over 50 years, tamed in Turkmenistan
Turkmenistan government said it has managed to significantly reduce an enormous 230-feet wide fire that has been raging for over 50 years. Known as 'Gateway to Hell', Darvaza Gas Crater is a massive gas well that got ignited in 1971, when Soviet scientists experimented with it. "Numerous wells have been drilled around the fire to capture methane," an official said.
