Acidity in oceans crosses critical limit for marine life for first time: Report
The world's oceans have, for the first time, crossed a critical safety limit for marine ecosystems, the Potsdam Institute's 2025 Planetary Health Check warned. Since the industrial era, surface pH has fallen by 0.1 units, meaning acidity has risen by 30-40%. Due to fossil fuel emissions, more carbon dioxide dissolves into seawater, forming carbonic acid, increasing the acidity.
