Carnivorous death-ball sponge found in deep ocean
Scientists have identified 30 previously unknown species, including a carnivorous 'death-ball' sponge in the Southern Ocean. Unlike typical sponges, which typically filter-feed on microscopic particles drifting through the water, this spherical predator uses tiny hooks to trap prey. Researchers say its unique shape and hunting strategy highlight how life adapts to extreme deep-sea conditions.
