China demolishes 300 dams to save fish in Asia's longest river
China has demolished 300 dams and decommissioned 342 small hydropower plants on a key tributary of the upper Yangtze to protect fish and revive Asia's longest river. These removal efforts reconnected tributaries, ensuring water flow and spawning grounds for migratory fish, Xinhua reported. In 2020, China had imposed a 10-year fishing ban in conservation areas of the Yangtze River basin.
