For the first time, India's birth and death rates have dropped to nearly half their levels from fifty years ago, according to data from the Sample Registration System. The birth rate (live births per thousand population) has fallen from 36.9 in 1971 to 18.4 in 2023. Meanwhile, the death rate (deaths per thousand population) has decreased to 6.4 in 2023.
