Indian-origin Democrat Ghazala Hashmi becomes Virginia's 1st Muslim Lt Governor
Indian-origin Democrat Ghazala Hashmi has won Virginia lieutenant governor's race, becoming the first Muslim and the first South Asian American to serve in the Virginia Senate. Born in 1964, Ghazala spent her childhood in Malakpet, Hyderabad. She was four when she emigrated to the US with her mother and older brother, joining her father in Georgia.
