James Webb telescope spots doomed star hidden behind dust cloud
Astronomers identified a massive red supergiant star using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which was cloaked in thick clouds of dust, moments before it exploded into supernova SN2025pht. The discovery, JWST's first of its kind, revealed that many such stars hide behind dust clouds, solving the mystery of why red supergiants are rarely seen exploding.
