Maharashtra's jails have 12,343 excess prisoners: CM Fadnavis
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis informed the Legislative Council that there were 39,527 prisoners in the 60 jails of Maharashtra as of May 2025, exceeding their capacity of 27,184. This comes to an excess of 12,343 inmates. He added that the government is taking steps to accommodate 17,110 more prisoners by building new prisons or expanding the capacity of existing ones.
