Mysterious 2,500‑year‑old 'gift to the gods' finally identified
A mysterious 2,500-year-old 'gift to the gods' found in bronze jars at a Greek shrine in Paestum, Italy, has finally been identified as preserved honey. Oxford scientists detected a chemical fingerprint nearly identical to modern honey and beeswax using advanced gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Notably, honey is said to have been eaten by Greek god Zeus as a child.
