Pink sea anemone that makes protective shells for crabs discovered
A pale-pink sea anemone, Paracalliactis tsukisome, discovered off Japan, has been found to build protective shell structures for hermit crabs. Living at depths of 190-500 metres, it forms a unique symbiotic relationship with crabs, creating a hardened carcinoecium for its shell. The anemone anchors near the shell opening for optimal growth while allowing crabs to find empty snail shells nearby.
