SIM card owners may be held responsible if it's used for fraud, says DoT in new statement
Telecom Department (DoT) issued statement informing citizens that they may be held responsible if a SIM card issued in their name is used for fraud. DoT warned citizens against using procured or assembled devices like modems, modules, or SIM boxes that have configurable or tampered IMEIs. Penalties for violation of Telecommunications Act include three-year jail, or ₹50-lakh fine, or both.
