Umbrella-making unit in Kerala helps reduce infant mortality rate
Kerala’s Attappadi tribal district, once known for high infant deaths due to maternal malnutrition, saw change after a tribal welfare NGO started an umbrella manufacturing unit in 2014. It aimed to provide women with income and improve health. Starting with 50 women, now 360 are trained. Over 3 lakh 'Karthumbi' umbrellas have been made, offering seasonal livelihood and stability.
