Navratri is a time when Hindus celebrate Goddess Durga for killing demon Mahishasura. The demon was granted immortality by Lord Brahma and had been told that he could only be defeated by a woman. Goddess Durga fought Mahishasura for several days as he kept changing his form to confuse her. However, when he turned into a buffalo, she killed him.
