What was Operation Pawan in which Indian Army lost 1,171 soldiers?
Operation Pawan began in 1987, when the Rajiv Gandhi government deployed Indian Peace Keeping Force to Sri Lanka to help end the conflict between Tamil and Sinhalese groups and disarm militants like LTTE. But soon, the LTTE broke peace accord and attacked Indian troops, leading to loss of 1,171 soldiers. Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi honoured the soldiers on Tuesday.
