Why do people cry when they chop onions?
Chopping an onion causes people to cry as it produces a chemical irritant known as syn-Propanethial-S-oxide, which stimulates lachrymal glands in the eyes, forcing them to produce tears. Earlier, scientists used to blame the enzyme alliinase, but recent studies have proved that lachrymatory-factor synthase is the key enzyme specifically responsible for producing the tear-inducing compound.
