Why is Calcutta Stock Exchange shutting down after 117 years?
Once a rival to the Bombay Stock Exchange, the 117-year-old Calcutta Stock Exchange is reportedly closing after celebrating its last-ever Diwali this year. Domination of BSE, NSE and struggles to cope with the 2000 dot com boom, led to its decline. The ₹120-crore Ketan Parekh scam of 2001 shook investor confidence. In 2013, SEBI suspended its operations over repeated non-compliance.
