Why is the National Flag Adoption Day observed on July 22?
The tricolour flag of India, or the Tiranga, as it is known today, was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on July 22, 1947, just days before India gained independence. It was first designed by Pingali Venkayya in 1921 and had a spinning wheel in the centre. The Ashoka Chakra later replaced this spinning wheel in the final design.
