Box breathing is a controlled breathing technique wherein a person inhales for four seconds, holds breath for four, exhales for four, and holds again for four, forming a box pattern. It activates parasympathetic nervous system and helps in lowering stress. This type of deep breathing is also employed by United States Navy SEALs. The technique is also called four-square breathing.
