Scientists finally discover why Mars is red

A new NASA-funded study suggests that the water-rich iron mineral ferrihydrite is behind Mars' reddish dust. At some point, iron within rocks on Mars reacted with water or water and oxygen in the air, creating iron oxide. Previous studies of iron oxide on Mars didn't detect evidence of water, leading researchers to believe the iron oxide must be hematite.
