Researchers have found that the Atlas blue butterfly holds the highest chromosome count in animal kingdom, with 229 pairs. Over three million years, its chromosomes have split into many smaller sections, where DNA is loosely wound, reflecting rapid evolution. Apart from the sex chromosomes, all others were broken up, but the butterfly retained roughly the same amount of genetic information.
