A recent study found that certain areas of human auditory cortex respond uniquely to chimpanzee vocalisations. The study used fMRI to analyse auditory cortex activity in 23 participants who listened to sounds from humans, chimpanzees, bonobos and macaques. Superior temporal gyrus, involved in processing sounds, including music and emotions, showed distinct activation pattern for chimpanzee calls.
