The European Union (EU) is considering a ban on the usage of ethanol as an active ingredient in hand sanitisers due to fears of increased cancer risk, the Financial Times reported. This came after the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) reportedly flagged ethanol as a potential carcinogen that also increases risk of pregnancy complications. ECHA has reportedly suggested exploring safer alternatives.
