A recent study published in PLOS Biology suggests that the brain's basic mechanisms for visual attention emerged over 500 million years ago. Researchers found that the superior colliculus, a primitive deep-brain structure, can perform fundamental computations to detect and prioritise visual stimuli. The discovery challenges beliefs that only the cortex handles such complex computations.
