Tom Barrack, US Ambassador to Turkey, rejected the notion of the Middle East. "There is no Middle East...there are tribes and villages. The nation-states in the region were created by the British and French in 1916," he said. He added that life in the region revolves around religion and that it's an illusion that all different nations could align politically.
