A new study suggests the Maya used hand signs on Altar Q, a 1,300-year-old stone in Copán, Honduras. Linguistic anthropologist Rich Sandoval, a linguistic anthropologist at Metropolitan State University of Denver, said the signs may represent dates in the Maya Long Count Calendar and resemble a form of sign language. Some experts, however, called his interpretation "implausible".
