Researchers from University of British Columbia successfully performed first human transplant of a kidney converted from blood type A to the universal type O. The enzyme-converted kidney, transplanted into a brain-dead recipient, showed no signs of hyperacute rejection (destructive immune response) for two days. The study could pave way for on-demand universal donor blood in transfusion medicine.
