Addressing a press conference, West Bengal DGP Rajeev Kumar on Saturday said that rumour-mongering was the primary cause of the violence in Murshidabad. "Police would not tolerate any form of unrest and will take strict action against those involved," he said. Speaking on the Murshidabad incident, he said police had to open fire to protect people as the situation escalated.
