Saudi Arabia has officially abolished Kafala system after 50 years and it is expected to directly benefit around 13 million migrant workers in the country. Kafala system tied each migrant worker to a local sponsor, or 'Kafeel', who controlled their residency, employment and legal status in Saudi Arabia. Human Rights organisations called the system an example of "modern-day slavery".
