The WHO has urged countries to hike real prices on sugary drinks, alcohol and tobacco by at least 50% through health taxes by 2035. WHO said this would curb chronic diseases and boost public revenue. WHO cited a report that estimated that a one-time 50% price rise could prevent 50 million premature deaths globally over the next 50 years.
