Florida's iconic coral reef system has suffered a major collapse after a record 2023 heatwave drove extreme water temperatures, causing near-total death of key reef-building corals. With Elkhorn and staghorn species now functionally extinct, the reef can no longer maintain its structure or protect coastlines. This is shrinking marine habitats and putting tourism under pressure.
