Microsoft has developed a prototype analogue optical computer (AOC) that uses beams of light instead of electrons to perform calculations. Unlike digital computers relying on binary, AOC embodies computations in physical systems and bypasses bottlenecks in conventional chips. Researchers claim it could achieve up to 100 times faster performance and greater energy efficiency on specific AI tasks.
