A recent study suggests that while species are disappearing at alarming pace, we aren't witnessing a mass extinction yet. The researchers found that less than 2% of mammal genera went extinct in the last 500 years and under 0.5% of genera vanished across all groups. The five known mass extinctions in Earth's history saw at least 75% of species vanishing.
