Study reveals why some memories last while others fade fast

A recent study suggested that long-term memories form through layered molecular programmes that strengthen important experiences while letting others fade. The study in mice found that memory-related molecules like Camta1 and Tcf4 in thalamus and Ash1l in cortex acted on different timescales to preserve memories. Memories fade away quickly if these molecules are not activated.
