When one breathes in polluted air amid high AQI, the microscopic particles settle deep inside bronchi and alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs. "The body responds as if fighting an infection-by producing mucus, swelling the airways and activating immune cells," says Dr Nikhil Modi, adding, "This leads to coughing, throat irritation, burning sensation in the chest, and shortness of breath."
