A recent discovery by University of Hawai'i researchers has solved the mystery of why it "rains" on Sun. The researchers found that rapid formation of plasma rain (coronal rain) during solar flares is caused by shifting elemental abundances, particularly changes in amounts of elements like iron in Sun's atmosphere. Earlier models had assumed Sun's corona had a constant element makeup.
