A study has linked long-term exposure to sulphur dioxide, a gas released by burning coal, oil, and other fossil fuels, to higher risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a deadly nerve disease. Researchers compared 304 ALS patients with 1,207 healthy individuals, analysing air quality where they lived. ALS patients had greater SO₂ exposure, suggesting it may contribute to nerve damage.
