New research revealed that the world's oldest mummies were smoked-dried 10,000 years ago in Southeast Asia and China, predating Egyptian and Chilean practices. Scientists studied graves in China, Philippines, Laos, Thailand and Malaysia, finding hyperflexed skeletons with signs of low-intensity heating. The practice, linked to ritual and spiritual beliefs, preserved corpses before burial.
