Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis, also known as 'brain-eating amoeba', has caused 19 deaths in Kerala so far. Avoid swimming or bathing in untreated freshwater waterbodies like ponds and lakes, & avoid exposing open wounds to untreated water or soil. Use nose clips or keep the head above water while swimming in freshwater. Ensure pools are regularly cleaned and properly chlorinated.
