Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, while commentating in the second India-New Zealand Test in Pune, called Rohit Sharma a "negative captain" over defensive field. Gavaskar made the remark when Rohit had placed fielder near the boundary rope on the bowling of spinners in the first session of the match. Ravi Shastri also called Rohit's approach as "too defensive".
