New 'giant' DNA that may be linked to gum disease discovered

A study led by researchers at University of Tokyo has led to discovery of Inocles, "giant" strands of extrachromosomal DNA hidden inside bacteria in human mouths. Inocles are believed to play a key role in helping bacteria adapt to the constantly changing oral environment, contributing to cavities and gum disease. They could serve as potential markers for diseases like cancer.
