A study by University of California found that early humans, even Neanderthals, were exposed to lead, which may have helped early humans evolve language and intelligence. It examined 51 fossilised teeth from sites across Africa, Asia, Europe and found lead traces in 73% of fossils. Acquisition of modern NOVA1 gene variant may have protected us from harmful effects of lead.
