Researchers have discovered Ice XXI that remains solid even at room temperature when subjected to extreme pressure. Using a diamond anvil cell, they compressed water between diamonds and tracked changes with ultra-fast X-rays. At about 1.6 gigapascals, equivalent to nearly 16,000 times Earth's atmospheric pressure, the water formed a stable, perfectly ordered crystal structure that doesn't melt.
