A study by University of California suggested that soybean oil may contribute to obesity. The researchers found that mice, which were fed a high-fat diet rich in soybean oil, put on substantial weight due to linoleic acid that is broken down into oxylipins, which can trigger fat buildup. Genetically engineered mice, which processed linoleic acid differently, didn't gain weight.
