A recent study suggested that dogs boost teenagers' mental health, with teenagers who owned dogs at age 13 scoring low on measures of social problems. They transferred microbiota from dog-owning teens to mice and found that the animals showed more social approach towards trapped cage mates. They discovered bacteria promoting empathy in gut microbiomes of adolescents who keep dogs.
